Marxist writer defends Left support to UPA

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 5. Defending the Left parties' support to the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, noted Marxist writer and professor of the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Javed Alam, has said the Left parties should `radicalise' the democratic process by mounting pressure on the Government for resisting the `bad features' of the structural adjustments dictated by the globalisation policies.

The Left parties, which were extending crucial support to the UPA, should also fight for pressing the Government to put more investment in core areas like public health, education and employment generation, he said. Prof. Alam was delivering a lecture on `religious extremism' at a meeting by the Social Sciences Trust here on Sunday.

Dangerous trend

Expressing concern over the dangerous trend in the form of an `explosive mixture' of religion and politics across the world, he said the breaking down of the `anti-imperialist' radical groups of the West Asia by the United States in the name of freedom led to spurt in Islamic terrorism in the Arab countries. This was followed by the regrouping of extremist outfits in Afghanistan where the United States encouraged the Taliban movement to further its agenda against the erstwhile Soviet Union.
