ONGOLE, DEC. 5. Human Rights Forum State convenor, K. Balagopal, has demanded that the Government take steps to help handloom weavers continue in their profession and make a decent living. Speaking to newspersons at Chirala today, Mr. Balagopal demanded that the Government ensure that the weavers are paid minimum wage. He wanted the Government to take up production and marketing of handloom cloth and provide assured employment to weavers. He asked the Government to implement reservation for 11 varieties of handloom cloth to protect the sector from undue competition from powerlooms. Saying that most of the weavers are suffering from several diseases due to malnutrition and poverty, he wanted the Government to open ESI hospitals in all areas predominantly inhabited by weavers and provide them free medical aid. Earlier, Mr. Balagopal visited the families where weavers had committed suicide and consoled their kin.
