Make medicare affordable: Governor

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 5. The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, has called for ways to ensure that people in lower income groups got the benefits of advances in medical science.

Inaugurating the 11th National Conference of the Indian chapter of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh here on Sunday, he said, "Even as medical science expands, it is our responsibility to ensure that the benefits go to all sections of the society."

He also urged medical specialists to allocate a part of their time for attending to poor patients free of cost.

"This is a social responsibility which I am sure you all will be willing to bear," he added.

Referring to the close association between the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the surgeon community in India, he said developments in medicine have done a great deal to reduce the pain of diseases. Humanity should be grateful to several life-saving drugs as some of the diseases, which were regarded as incurable earlier, have now become curable.

Family medicine

The President of the National Board of Examinations, A. Rajasekaran, said the Board would popularise the less-known family medicine. He also suggested that the Board should be made the sole authority to oversee various aspects relating to post-graduate medical education, including selections and training.

The Chairman, Apollo Group of Hospitals, Pratap C. Reddy, has stressed the need for the healthcare system to match global standards and to build an Indian healthcare brand.

The vice-president, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, IMC MacIntyre, the chairman and secretary of the Indian Chapter, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, S. Vittal and Gautham Sen also spoke.
