NEW DELHI, DEC. 5. Stressing the need for academic programmes on disability studies and rehabilitation sciences at the university level, a Disability Rights Action Group was launched on Saturday at the concluding ceremony of a national summit on "Disability, Human Rights, Law and Policy''. Organised by the Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, the four-day summit saw a list of recommendation being submitted to the President, A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. Inaugurated by noted journalist and former Rajya Sabha member, Kuldip Nayar, the summit discussed various issues such as law and society, global norms and standards, government action on disability policies and politics of discrimination action among others. While bringing to light the inadequacy of the existing policies, the Society has asked for laws to ensure disability human rights in order to pursue and promote education, employment and non-discriminatory social environment. Bringing to notice the lack of authenticity of date on disability, the Society has also urged for qualitative improvement of education and training programmes by adopting appropriate technology and innovative methods. In the case of education, the Society has expressed the need for urgency in initiating and introducing more programmes at the higher education level and incorporating disability and rehabilitation concepts in the curricula of formal and non formal educational programmes of academic institutions. Sensitisation of intelligentsia, policy makers, social activists and the media is yet another issue brought up in the letter with the need for networking of organisations and institutions working in the disability area also being raised.
