KANPUR, DEC. 5 . Students of a Government-run technology institute here went on the rampage following the alleged suicide by a hosteller, torching and damaging vehicles and throwing stones at teachers and policemen, prompting police to resort to a lathicharge and detain six of them. Angry students of Harcort Buttler Technology Institute (HBTI) damaged about 35 vehicles and resorted to stone-pelting after the death of Devashis, a B.Tech second year student, who consumed poison last night as he feared failure in a recent examination, the police said today. The students demanded a vehicle to take him to hospital last night but the college authorities could not provide one, the police said and added that the student was later taken on a motorcycle to the L. L. R hospital, where he was declared dead. The students then resorted to brick-batting near the hospital and HBTI campus and also set afire three cars on the campus, prompting police to resort to a lathicharge to disperse them. About six students were taken into custody, the police said. Two professors, including Dean Ashok Kumar and Chief Proctor Raj Kumar were suspended by the college authorities today for ``failing'' to provide a vehicle to take the student to hospital, official sources said. Acting Principal P. N. Maheshwari has ordered a probe into the circumstances leading to the death of Devashis, to be conducted by Professor A. P. Verma, head of chemical department, who has been asked to submit the report within 24 hours, the sources said. PTI
