Cricket
A good win but... Sir, The turbanator has done it again in the company of Anil Kumble to bring India a series win over South Africa. While the Indians deserve praise, we must not forget that the visiting side was an inexperienced one, with stalwarts like Allan Donald, Gary Kirsten and Jonty Rhodes having left the scene. From that earlier squad only Jacques Kallis remains and even if he could not contribute to bowling, he showed his ability as a solid batsman. Still, this win should do good to the Indian team's morale. C.P. Srinivasan, Chennai. Bright aspects Sir, India should not read too much into this Test series victory over South Africa. Players like V.V.S. Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar hardly looked in form. Even skipper Sourav Ganguly contributed little with the bat. One bright aspect, however, was wicketkeeper Dinesh Kaarthick's performance. Of course, the achievement of Anil Kumble in equalling Kapil Dev's record as the highest wicket taker in the country was also significant. Kumble looks good to play for another five years and should aim for 600 wickets. Pankaj Kumar, Chennai. Amend the rule Sir, With regard to the fine of 30 per cent of the match fee imposed on Sourav Ganguly, it is time the BCCI moved the ICC to amend the rules to review video replay. If the third umpire confirms (as in the instant case of bat/pad catch off Jacques Kallis) that a wrong decision had been given, the concerned field umpire has to be pulled up. In crunch situations a wrong umpiring decision could change the course of the match. T. Ramachandran, Chennai. Disappointment Sir, The Indian cricket team for the Bangladesh is a disappointment. The selectors have missed a fine opportunity to include young talent in the team. But for Gagandeep Singh and Shib Sankar Paul, the team presents the same faces who have been regularly doing duty. Then, how can we build a side for tougher assignments ahead? D.B.N. Murthy, Bangalore. A great cricketer Sir, Congratulations to ace cricketer Kapil Dev for receiving the Castrol Lifetime Achievement award. Sports has produced many icons and surely cricket's numero uno is Kapil Dev, a player who has a special place in the hearts of his many fans. Suresh Jayadevan, Chennai. World champion Sir, Viswanathan Anand showed the way and now following his illustrious footsteps is P. Harikrishna in winning the World junior chess title. Koneru Humpy had won the World girls title some time back. Indeed if there is one sport in India where we have been consistently doing well at the World stage then it is chess. For this, The nation's gratitude has to go to Anand, who remains a role model. K.V. Raman, Chennai.
Chennai.
