Madurai

MADURAI, DEC.5. The Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council has condemned the "politicisation" of the arrest of Kanchi Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswathi. In a statement issued here today, the council president and Archbishop of Madurai, Rev. Peter Fernando, said the attempts being made by some communal forces to give religious colour to the issue, accusing Christians of conspiring the Seer's arrest would not succeed. Though the arrest was painful, the law should be allowed to take its course. "We believe in religious pluralism," he said, adding that the arrest should be seen as a lawful action taken against a person accused of an offence.
