BANGALORE, DEC. 5. Football fans, shocked by the death of Dempo Football Club player, Cristiano Junior, thronged the HOSMAT Hospital where his body was brought on Sunday. He reportedly collapsed immediately after scoring his second goal against Mohan Bagan here on Sunday. Dempo won 2-0. The two goals came from Cristiano Junior. The fans, who shouted slogans against the Karnataka Football Association (KFA) office-bearers, for alleged improper arrangements to deal with such emergencies, said the incident had brought bad name to the State. They said the KFA had spent over Rs. 70 lakhs but had failed to take measures to deal with such situations. Alleging misappropriation of money in KFA, they sought to know how the money had been spent. They said the ambulance secured to shift the Cristiano Junior, a Brazilian playing for Dempo, did not have oxygen. With a promise to make it a big issue, the fans advised the other Dempo team players not to play again in Karnataka unless foolproof arrangements were made by the KFA. One of them said: "Only you can take up the issue. We are just fans, we are there now. But you are there in the field all the while. You should ensure that this does not recur in future." Another fan said: "Tomorrow my child also may play football, but he should not have such appalling conditions." A team member said the players had given their views to their managers and it was being taken up at an appropriate level. Another player said Cristiano Junior was married only two months ago and his wife was settled in Goa. The fans blocked the ambulance, which was shifting the body of the player to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem, for some time. But they yielded when top police officers consoled them and requested them to allow the ambulance to proceed.
