BANGALORE, DEC. 5. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Health Department officials have come under fire from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members for not attending the three-day training workshop on dengue fever organised by the Union Department of Health and Family Welfare from December 1 in the city. Although the department had organised a workshop for all BMP Health Department officials, only six officials had attended it. "The fact that the officials have not attended the workshop shows their irresponsibility. We demand stringent action against the absentees and an explanation from them," corporator B.N. Mangala said. In a press release, the member has criticised the officials for not showing any interest in such training programmes. Responding to the allegations, the BMP Chief Health Officer (CHO), Nagarbett, has said over 13 BMP officials had been deputed for training in two batches. Of these, only six could attend because the others were either on leave or had urgent work. Those who could not attend the workshop would make it for the second round to be held from December 6, the CHO has said. Pointing out that the number of dengue cases had come down drastically in the past two years, the CHO has added that over 224 cases had been reported in 2002, 286 in 2003 and only 11 this year. He said the civic body had taken several measures to tackle the mosquito menace and create awareness among people. "We have started rapid and regular spraying of chemicals to control the menace," he said.
