Anti-smoking campaign

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 5. The Achutha Menon Centre of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute will conduct a painting competition as part of its anti-smoking campaign. The themes are a logo with an anti-smoking picture and message referring to the health problems caused by smoking, and pictures which help one to quit smoking. The pictures can be in the form of cartoons too. Certificates and cash awards will be presented to the best logo and five paintings. All the pictures should be sent to Project Cell, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology, Thiruvananthapuram-

Essay competition

The Thiruvananthapuram Jilla Upabhokthru Samithi will conduct an essay competition in connection with the National Consumers' Day this year on the topic, `Consumer Protection Act in Kerala.'

Entries should not exceed 10 pages. These should be sent to D. Venugopal, general secretary, Thiruvananthapuram Jilla Upabhokthru Samithi, T. C. 44/1581; Vadakkenada, Fort P.O., Thiruvananthapuram-695 023, before December 10.

Grant disbursed

A sum of Rs.2.5 crores has been distributed to 18 handloom consortiums in the district after including these in the State Government's 100-day action plan, according to an official press release. This grant amount should be used for purchasing weaving equipment, yarn, etc.

Palliative care

The State Government will ensure that morphine tablets in their required quantities were made available for the benefit of terminally ill cancer patients, said K. Ramamoorthy, Health Secretary, while releasing a book on `Palliative Care' authored by C.V. Prashanth, Medical Officer, Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at a function held here today.
