Letters to the Editor
Sir, One more anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition has gone by. Certain things are better forgotten. But by saying that it was an "act of God" people like Kalyan Singh reopen wounds.

Sir, This refers to the article, "Ayodhyas of the heart," (Sunday Magazine, Dec. 5) which argues that while the Ramayana is resonant with compassion in Southeast Asia, in India it has been reduced to a sectarian weapon. The comparison is incorrect. The legacy of the Ramayana in Indonesia is a vestige of the cultural influence of Indian kings and traders who visited the country; the destruction of the Babri mosque was an outcome of politics. There is no parallel between a gradual process spread over centuries and an aberrant incident. The mosque's destruction does not make the Ramayana in India any less significant than it has been over the centuries.
