Letters to the Editor
Sir, The famous music season in Chennai has begun. One cannot but recall the good old days. Some pioneers of Carnatic Music who belonged to the last century and contributed a great deal were veena vidwan Desamangalam Subramania Sastrigal, mathalam Thiruvilvamala Venkichan and mridangam Palakkad Subbier. Desamangalam performed in temples during the Rama Navami and Krishna Jayanthi, and in some select marriages. During the famous Thrissur Pooram festival, crowds would throng to hear Venkichan's mathalam. Those were the days when there were no mikes and modern facilities but it was a pleasure listening to the stalwarts.
