NEW DELHI, DEC. 6. The Central Bureau of Investigation today registered five cases relating to the "Tehelka tapes" on alleged corruption in defence deals. The former Bharatiya Janata Party president, Bangaru Laxman, and the then Samata Party chief, Jaya Jaitly, are among those against whom cases have been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), 1988 and Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Cases were also registered against two members of Mr. Laxman's personal staff N. Uma Maheshwar Raju alias Raju Venkatesh and Satyamurthy. Ms. Jaitly, Major General S.P. Murugai (retd.), Surender Kumar Surekha, an industrialist from Kanpur, and Gopal Pacherwal, a Samata Party activist, also face prosecution under Section 120-B IPC, read with Section 9 of the PCA. Cases were also registered against H.C. Pant, then Deputy Director, Ministry of Defence, P. Sasi, an assistant in the Defence Ministry and Narender Singh, Assistant Financial Adviser, Ministry of Defence, now under suspension.
