By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, DEC. 6. The Tamil novel writer, Anuradha Ramanan, today made a statement before Ramajayam, munsif-cum-judicial magistrate, at Uthiramerur, near here, under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in connection with the Sankararaman murder case, in which the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, has been arrested. (Section 164 pertains to a statement recorded by a witness before a magistrate).

Ms. Ramanan was brought to the court by an all-woman police team, which is investigating the charges of sexual exploitation of women by those connected with the Kanchi Mutt.

She and Senthilvel, who is said to have assisted Sankararaman, manager of the Kancheepuram Varadaraja Perumal temple, in typing out the letters he drafted, were produced before the magistrate around 1.15 p.m.

Hearing on bail pleas

Meanwhile, the bail applications moved by eight persons, arrested in the murder case, in the Kancheepuram District Sessions Court at Chengalpattu, were posted to December 13.

When the applications, filed by Kathiravan, `Dil' Pandian, Arumugam, Sathish, Palani, `Kuruvi' Ravi, Sekar and Sundaram in the last week of November, came up for hearing today, the District and Sessions Judge, Akbar Ali, posted the hearing to December 13.

G. Uthamaraj, Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate-I, extended to December 20 judicial custody for Senthilkumar and Arumugam (who along with Palani, `Kuruvi' Ravi, Sekar and Sundaram arranged for proxy surrenders in the case).
