Butt stars in Pakistan's win

PERTH, DEC. 7. Opener Salman Butt hit an unbeaten century as Pakistan beat the Chairman's XI by 43 runs in a one-day cricket tour match at Perth's Lilac Hill on Tuesday.

Butt had 11 boundaries and one 6 in his 115 from 135 balls. The Chairman's XI was 213 all out in reply to Pakistan's 256 for nine.

Retired Australians Geoff Lawson (one for 31) and Tony Dodemaide (one for 25) bowled for the Chairman's side, while part-time medium-pacer Mike Hussey claimed three for 28.

Experienced Pakistan batsmen Yousuf Youhana (15), Shahid Afridi (21) and skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq (16) all failed to score well as the visitor prepares for the first Test against Australia at the WACA ground beginning on December 16.

West Australian wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi hit five 6s in his 51 from just 44 balls and Chris Rogers made 61 from 59 deliveries. But Test opener Justin Langer (1) and State regulars Murray Goodwin (8) and Mike Hussey (8) failed to make inroads into the Pakistan attack.

Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan was the best Pakistan bowler, finishing with three for 36.

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer said Salman's performance on Tuesday put him in the running to be included in the line-up for the Perth Test.

``(It) definitely puts him into the mix, with 100 against India as well in Kolkata on a much bigger occasion,'' Woolmer said. ``It showed what temperament he had then and he showed a bit of skill today.'' — AP
