dated December 8, 1954: UP's new Chief Minister

The UP Congress Legislature Party Executive, meeting in Lucknow on December 7, approved the candidature of the Home Minister, Mr. Sampurnanand, for party leadership in succession to Pandit Pant, who is joining the Central Cabinet by month-end. The Executive meeting, convened to discuss the situation created by the controversy over the candidature, recommended the name of Mr. Sampurnanand to the party. The party has now been called to meet on December 11 - five days earlier than the scheduled date - to elect the new leader. Pandit Pant presided over the meeting.
