dated December 8, 1954: Pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash

Over 3,000 pilgrims, men and women, went on a pilgrimage from different parts of India to Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake in western Tibet this year. The unusual increase in the number this year was due to Tibet's biggest religious fair, Ta-lo, which is held at Mt. Kailash once in 12 years, like Kumbh Mela. Ta-lo, meaning horse year, is considered by the Tibetans as the most sacred year. and they celebrate it throughout the year by going round the 22,028-foot high Kailash peak, which, according to the Hindu mythology, is the abode of Lord Siva.
