Live telecast

Sir, — The move to telecast the entire proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament is welcome. However, the behaviour of our MPs in the recent past has not given us much cause for celebration. In the present situation, full-day coverage will only lead to the people losing respect for democracy.

E. Sivasankaran,
Coimbatore, T.N.

* * *

Sir, — The move will enable the voters to have an insight into the working of Parliament. But nowadays, parliamentary proceedings consist of only noise, walkouts and other forms of pandemonium.

Gone are the days when veterans such as Feroze Gandhi, Bupesh Gupta, Hiren Mukerjee and Madhu Limaye used to enliven Parliament with their eloquent debating skills interspersed with humour. Unless there is substantial improvement in the quality of debates, the telecast of the proceedings at enormous cost to the exchequer may not attract many viewers.

T.K. Subramanian,
Chennai
