Three fishermen drowned in sea

MANGALORE
DEC. 7.
Three fishermen, who went in search of mussels off the Tannirbavi Beach in a country boat on Monday, were drowned in the Arabian Sea after their boat overturned. Their bodies were found washed ashore at the beach on Tuesday. The police gave the names of the fishermen as Iqbal (23), Khalid (20) and Madhu Kotian (24), residents of Tannirbavi. The police said local fishermen found the boat washed ashore on Monday evening but without the three fishermen. The bodies were taken to the District Government Wenlock Hospital for post-mortem and then handed over to the relatives of the dead fishermen, the police said. The Panambur Police is investigating the case.
Bagalkot peaceful

The authorities have decided not to continue the prohibitory order as Bagalkot remained peaceful for the second day on Tuesday. However, advocates stayed away from courts in protest against the police "assault" on some of their colleagues during the agitation. They wore black badges and staged a dharna on the court premises. The advocates demanded that the policemen involved in the assault should tender an apology in public. The boycott affected court work, especially some anticipatory bail applications. The Chamber of Commerce and the Bagalkot Santhrasthara Horata Vedike spearheaded the agitation seeking implementation of the Rs. 638-crore Bagalkot rehabilitation package announced during by the previous Government. The two-week agitation, which witnessed a series of violent incidents, ended on Sunday after the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, reiterated the Government's commitment to the package.
Central drought team coming

Dec. 7.
A five-member team of the Central Drought Monitoring Committee is expected to visit Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur and Koppal districts next week to review the drought situation and assess the crop loss in some of the villages in these districts. According to sources at the Deputy Commissioner's office here, a Central team from Delhi was expected to reach Hyderabad by flight on December 13 and reach Bidar by road. After a three-day tour of Bidar and Gulbarga districts, it was likely to visit Raichur district on December 16 where it will review the drought situation and crop condition in some villages in the Lingsugur-Mudgal belt of Lingsugur taluk. It will also visit Kustagi-Tavargera belt in Koppal taluk. The team will return to Raichur the same day for a halt. On December 17, it will hold a review meeting with the district administration.
Classical music competition

Dec. 7.
The Sangeetha Bharathi Trust will hold a State-level Hindustani and Carnatic Classical Music Competition at Kundapur in Udupi district on December 26. In a press release issued here, the Joint Managing Trustee of the trust, A.V. Hebbar, said the competition in the senior division had attracted over 50 participants from Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Dharwad, Mysore, Bellary, Bangalore, Kolar, Shimoga, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The trust would felicitate the Hindustani vocalist, Parmeshwar Hegde. The renowned Hindustani vocalist, Balachandra Nakod of the Gwalior and Kirana Gharana would give a concert the same day, the release added.
Crop destroyed

Sugarcane crop was destroyed in a fire at Anchepalya on National Highway 48 in Tumkur district on Tuesday. The police said the fire occurred in a four-acre sugarcane field owned by Shivajamma of the village. By the time a fire tender was pressed into service from Kunigal town and the fire doused by firemen, crop in more than one acre of land was destroyed.
Shop, hotel building gutted

A textile shop and a hotel building were destroyed in a fire at Belavatha village near here on Monday. It is said that the fire broke out in the shop owned by Narayana Rao of the village and spread to the hotel. A fire tender, which rushed to the village, could not reach the place on time as it was stranded after the gates at a railway level crossing were closed. The police said cloth and sewing machines in the shop and foodgrains and furniture in the hotel were destroyed, though some villagers tried in vain to extinguish the flames. The reason for the fire is not known. The police suspect that the fire was caused by a short circuit.
`Protect places of worship'

Heads of various religious institutions in Bidar district have urged the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to intervene and protect the sanctity of all places of worship. In a memorandum submitted by the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, the head Granthi of the Guru Nanak Jhira Gurudwara, Fr. Robert Miranda Episcopal Vicar of the Catholic church, and Mohammad Sirajuddin, president of the Idgah committee in Bidar have requested Mr. Abdul Kalam to ensure that status quo be maintained in respect of the places of worship of all religions, as was on August 15, 1947. Their other demands include enactment of a law to punish individuals and institutions that conspired, instigated, insulted and attacked places of worship. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary, Sangram Vakil, the district organiser of the Jamaat, Mohammad Asifuddin, Abdul Jabbar, Gouse Qureshi, Quaisar Rehman and Mohammad Anweruddin have signed the memorandum.
Matrimonial meet

Samruddhi, social service wing of the Gowd Saraswath Brahmin community, will organise a marriage meet at the Sujir C.V. Nayak Hall, Kadri, on Sunday. A press release from the organisers here said data on brides and bridegrooms collected at similar meets organised at Udupi, Karkala, Mangalore, Bangalore and Mumbai was available. Data collected by community organisations from Uttara Kannada would be made available to those participating in the meet. There was no entry fee. Priority would be given to men aged above 35 and women aged above 30. Time extended

The Karnataka State Open University has extended time for admissions to the three-year BA and B.Com, the two-year MA and M.Com and other courses till December 9. Details can be had from the KSOU study centre, Karnataka College, Bidar, according to a press release.
