KOLAR, DEC. 7. Preservation and development of tanks will go a long way in protecting environment, a former taluk panchayat President, C.V. Gopal, has said. Speaking after inaugurating a programme under the Jalasamvardhane Yojana to remove silt from Vajranagenahalli and Nagamangala Doddakere at Vajranagenahalli village in Mulbagal on Monday, Mr. Gopal said it was only by removing silt from tanks that the tanks could be preserved and developed. He pointed out that removal of silt would not only help store rainwater but also help rejuvenate the water table in the area. Terming the Jalasamvardhane Yojana as a boon to the drought-prone Kolar district, Mr. Gopal said under the programme, many development activities were being taken up through the Tank Users Group. This had contributed to the progress of villages in the command area. M.V.N. Rao, Director of Grama Vikas, who released "Nammura Kere'', a handbook aimed at educating rural women, said under the Jalasamvardhane programme Grama Vikas would take up various programmes to make villagers self-reliant. He said his organisation would also take up repair and relaying of feeder channels leading to tanks. M.S. Girija, team leader of Grama Vikas, Nagaraj, engineer, Jalasamvardhane Yojana, Chandrashekaran, Assistant Director of Agriculture Department, and M.G. Papamma, President of the District Mahila Okkoota, were present.
