CHITRADURGA, DEC. 7. Environmentalist and author, Vandana Shiva, has urged farmers to free themselves from the clutches of the fertilizer, seed, and pesticide lobby led by multinational companies (MNCs) to put an end to the spate of suicides by farmers in the country. Speaking to The Hindu , Dr. Shiva, who was here on Sunday to receive the Basava Sri Award instituted by Sri Murugha Mutt, Chitradurga, alleged that the superficial agricultural model, false pricing of agricultural produce, and the usage of so-called modern methods of farming were the reasons behind the tragic phenomena. She had analysed the problem in depth and said that the modern agricultural model had increased the cost of agriculture and raised dependency on MNCs. "Such a tragic phenomena is prevalent only in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, a few parts of Maharashtra and Punjab where MNCs are operating in a big way. In these areas, farming is essentially dependent on multinationals. This has increased the expenditure manifold," she said. "We need three things now Beeja Swaraj, Anna Swaraj and Jala Swaraj (freedom over seeds, food and water). These are the only shields to protect the farming community from the MNCs. We also need to maintain and respect our diversity," she added. She expressed happiness over being selected for the award and said that it meant a lot to her. Dr. Shiva said that the money received with the award would be spent on organising the "Anna Swaraj" movement. Recalling her association with Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, she said that the farmers' movements in Karnataka and other parts of the country had neither lost their focus nor relevance even under the changed circumstances. She, however, said that the farmers' movements were restricted to some parts of the State, but hoped that they would multiply.
