Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, DEC. 7. The Congress has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been allowed to convert a State Government function here into a party affair.
Protocol violation
Ayanur Manjunath, Congress leader and former MP, said the district administration had allowed the BJP to turn the inauguration of the Kadekal-Kusgur road into a party affair in the presence of the Shimoga MLA, K.S. Eshwarappa. This was condemnable and in violation of protocol, he added. Mr. Manjunath said the Congress had brought this to the notice of the Government and sought an inquiry. He said the BJP took credit for the work, although the sanction for it was obtained by the previous MLA, H.M. Chandrasekharappa, of the Congress.
Code of conduct
The road was completed by May, but it could not be declared open then. It could not be declared open as the model code of conduct for elections was in force, he added. According to him, Mir Azeez Ahmed, MLC and District Congress Committee president, was not invited for the function. Mr. Manjunath demanded that the Government order an inquiry into what he termed the manner in which the BJP brought pressure in getting works on national highways worth Rs. 6 crores in the district transferred from the Department of Public Works to National Highways Authority of India.
