BELGAUM, DEC. 7. The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Karnataka and Goa, has urged the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to intervene to ensure that the sanctity of places of worship are recognised and protected. The organisation, which launched an "Uphold Human Dignity" campaign recently, said the status, as on August 15, 1947, of all places of worship should be maintained. It demanded a law to punish people and institutions found conspiring against, insulting and attacking places of worship. The law-enforcing agencies must be made accountable for protecting these places and punished if they failed to do so. The Government should also be made responsible for immediate restoration of places of worship in case of damage or destruction and awarding compensation, according to a press release by the president of the organisation, Shahid Memon, here on Tuesday.
