Programme on traditional farming methods from Saturday

BELLARY, DEC. 7. A three-day programme, "Desi Sammelan 2004," focussing on traditional knowledge about agriculture, will be held at Kalabhavan in Hassan from Saturday.

The sammelan has been organised by the Folklore faculty of Kannada University, Hampi, in association with the Hassan district administration.

The sammelan will be presided over by H.J. Lakkappagowda, former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University.

H.D. Revanna, Minister for Public Works and Energy, will inaugurate the conference. H.D. Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister, and all elected representatives from the district are among the chief guests.

B.A. Vivek Rai, Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, will preside over the function.

The sammelan aims to re-establish the relationship between the farmer and his land, gain knowledge about traditional systems of cultivation that have been forgotten with modernisation and advances in the field of agriculture.

Exhibition

K.H. Ashwathnarayan Gowda, Bellary Deputy Commissioner, will inaugurate an exhibition of traditional agricultural implements; H.S. Prakash, Hassan MLA, will inaugurate the folk art exhibition; S.M. Anand, MLC, will inaugurate a book exhibition; and G.T. Kumar, president of the municipal council, will inaugurate an exhibition on "desi food."

Hi. Chi. Boralingaiah, professor of Tribal Studies, and Sa. Chi. Ramesh, Head of the Department of Folk Studies, Kannada University, will deliver special lectures.

The experts will present papers on "Krishi Samskruti," "Krishi Samrakshane," and "Krishi Mathu Jagatikarna." An interactive session with farmers on "Savayava Krishi" and "Modern agriculture: Alternatives" will also be held.

Mathighatta Krishnamurthy, renowned folk research scholar, will deliver the valedictory address on December 13. Jayaprakash Gowda, Syndicate Member of the university, and A.V. Navada, Head of the Manuscript Department, are among the chief guests. Karigowda Beechanahalli, Registrar of Kannada University, will preside over the function.
