CHITRADURGA, DEC.7. The Chitradurga City Municipal Council (CMC) on Monday approved an action plan for Rs. 75 lakhs for works, including the supply of drinking water, sanitation, road repairs, and sodium vapour lamps in important areas of the town.
Special meeting
The action plan was approved at a special meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner and administrative officer of the CMC, S.R. Umashankar. The meeting approved the spending of Rs. 15 lakhs for providing drinking water, Rs. 5 lakhs for installation of sodium vapour lamps, Rs. 5 lakhs for sanitation, Rs. 40 lakhs for road repairs, and Rs. 10 lakhs for creating basic civic works out of the Rs. 72.5 lakhs released under the 11th Finance Commission. G.H. Thippa Reddy, Chitradurga MLA, insisted on utilising the funds on development works on a priority basis. "Development works of connecting roads and streets have been taken up in the town using grants from the legislators' and municipal funds. It is essential to take up the works on major roads in the town," he said.
Grant
He also said that the Department of Tourism of the Union Government would be releasing a grant of Rs. 5 crores for the development of the Chitradurga fort. Ramadas, Municipal Commissioner, enlightened the members about the guidelines of the plan under which works would be taken up.
Desilting
C.T. Krishnamurthy, member, wanted the Thimmanna Nayaka tank and Doddana Nayaka tank to be desilted, which would help solve the drinking water problem to a great extent. He said that heavy expenditure on "Durgothsava" scheduled in February was not desirable as developmental works of the district needed funds. He also said that the road connecting the mango grove to the fort should be developed from the funds reserved for organising the festival.
Priority
Another member, Raghurama Reddy, wanted Rs. 2 lakhs to be distributed among the wards so that councillors could take up works on priority basis. He drew the attention of the Deputy Commissioner to the theft of water pipes stored at Kyadigere and demanded a thorough investigation. Mr. Umashankar promised to look into the matter. The Deputy Commissioner felt that the purpose of drafting the action plan would not be met if funds were distributed ward-wise.
