COLOMBO, DEC. 7. The Sri Lankan Supreme Court today sentenced a former Sri Lankan Minister, S.B. Dissanayake, to two years' rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court. A key leader of the Opposition United National Party (UNP), he was sentenced for comments he made on the Supreme Court and judges last year. Mr. Dissanayake, a former General Secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and a Minister in the President, Chandrika Kumaratunga's previous Peoples' Alliance (PA) Government, was among the PA MPs who crossed over to the UNP in October 2001. He was subsequently appointed as a Minister in the UNP government and was made the UNP's National Organiser this May.
