Demolition of temple arch leads to tension

MAHABUBNAGAR, DEC. 7. Tension prevailed in Nagarkurnool, a divisional headquarters town in district on Tuesday, following demolition of an arch of the Navagraha temple located on the Ayyappa Swamy temple premises.

According to reports reaching here, some unidentified persons damaged the Gopuram of the Navagraha temple in the wee hours.

A bandh was observed in the town and devotees of Ayyappa and activists of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar took out protest rally and staged a dharna near bus station. They also prevented RTC buses from leaving the depot till the evening.

The BJP State secretary, K. Laxman, who came from Hyderabad on knowing the incident, participated in the protest. The protesters wanted the police to book the persons responsible for the demolition. However, the situation was brought under control when the Revenue Divisional Officer, Krishna Reddy, assured the protesters that the temple would be renovated with all traditional honour.
