TIRUPTI, DEC. 7. Though the extraordinary taxpayer friendly scheme launched by the Central Board of Excise and Customs for registration of the Unregistered Taxable Service Providers (UTSP) relying on their declaration with full penalty waiver, was extended till November 30 in October hardly 82,000 new service providers were registered as against the over 22 lakh UTSPs present, according to a note circulated by the department.
To make it more effective, the department took up a month-long all-India `street to street' survey from November 15 for tracking the UTSPs and those who were not paying service tax despite registration. The survey would cover every `nook and corner' of the country, the note said. Around 400 additional vehicles were pressed into service and details of the UTSPs collected through the Internet and from the department's own inputs.
Action against defaulters
The UTSPs identified during the survey would be booked by the department and subjected to due legal process. Frequent anti-evasion interventions, based on credible information would be rigorously effected and all major cases reported to the media, the report warned. "We intend to work in tandem with the Income Tax Department regarding such tax evaders and we aim to bring into the service tax net during the survey at least 1.5 lakh UTSPs, the note said. It warned all the UTSPs to come forward and get registered to avoid the `rigours of penal action.' Therefore the buzzword is "Pay the service tax and sleep well,'' the note concluded.
