KURNOOL, DEC. 7. Sand extraction from the Tungabhadra and Hundri riverbeds has been banned by the Collector, Vikas Raj. In a statement, the District Panchayat Officer, M. Sobha Swarooparani, said the decision was necessary, as over-exploitation would lead to drinking water problem. Also, the heavy traffic of sand vehicles was damaging the roads. The Collector posted officers for a group of villages along the riverbank to prevent illegal extraction of sand. The ban also covers Sunkesula, Kothakota, Eerladinne, K. Singavaram, Mudumala and Kondapuram villages, where sand extraction was allowed in the past after paying royalty to the Government. The riverbank villages fall under Kurnool, C. Belagal and Kallur mandals. The EOs at Kallur and Kurnool, the Assistant Director, Mines and Geology, the MROs at C. Belagal, Kurnool and the Revenue Divisional Officer, Kurnool would supervise the implementation of the ban.
