Congress terms Opposition charges `baseless'

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, DEC. 7. Leaders of the Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party are levelling `baseless' allegations against the State Government `perturbed' by the fulfilment of pre-poll assurances by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the District Congress Committee president, Shaik Hussain, has said.

Fearing their existence if Dr. Reddy completed 26 irrigation projects with an outlay of Rs. 46,000 crores, the two opposition parties are making unwarranted charges out of `heartburn', he alleged at a press conference here. The opposition parties should give constructive suggestions to the Government in furthering development, rather than try to pose hurdles, he observed.

`No moral right'

The TDP as well as the BJP had no moral right to speak of farmers' welfare, as their Governments not only neglected the agricultural sector but also ridiculed farmers' suicides, Mr. Hussain alleged. Staging protests now claiming to be fighting for farmers' cause was akin to `devils quoting scriptures', he alleged. The Chandrababu Naidu Government had secured World Bank loans for Rs. 57,000 crores, but failed to develop the State and merely enriched TDP functionaries, he alleged.

In sharp contrast, the Rajasekhara Reddy Government was striving for the progress of all sections of people, right from granting free power supply to farmers soon after assuming charge, the DCC chief maintained. Refuting the TDP charge that Rajiv Yuva Shakthi scheme was being misused, he said it was being effectively implemented to empower youth without any political interference. The DCC Minority Cell leader, Afzal Khan, also participated.
