Pondicherry
By our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 7. The winter session of the Pondicherry Assembly begins tomorrow (December 8). Sources indicated here today that it was likely that after transacting scheduled business the House will adjourn sine die, making it a day's session only. However, the charges that the Opposition the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party have made against the Government in the last few months are likely to find an echo in the session. The plight of sugarcane farmers and mill workers attached to a private sugar mill, the trauma of depositors in a private nidhi (finance company) and the plea for civic polls (due since 1974) are some of the key issues in which the Opposition (and at times a section of the ruling Congress) has been demanding the Government's intervention. The Opposition has already grilled the Government over the "delay in extending relief to farmers and hut dwellers" affected during incessant rains in October and November in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. Following the last Lok Sabha poll and the formation of the Democratic Progressive Alliance the ruling Congress had come closer to the DMK and the other parties. Although the Left parties had been vociferous in criticising the Congress on several issues, the DMK had focussed on its merits. Hence the Congress has no vehement critic among the DPA allies. The AIADMK, having two members on its side and the lone BJP member have been unsparing critics of the Congress. The immediate task for the Rangasamy Government is to notify the civic poll date. The President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, had during his address to the special session of the Assembly on November 1, urged the Government to hold the panchayat polls.
