Interactive session

CHITRADURGA DEC. 7. The Chitradurga District Working Journalists' Union has organised an interactive session on "The revival of village theatre movement in the context of globalisation." The play "Kantu" will also be performed here on Wednesday. The programme has been organised in collaboration with SJM Sports and Cultural Association, Chitradurga.

Noted theatre personality and Rajyotsava award-winner Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji of Sanehalli will initiate the interactive programme. Noted theatre personalities such as Ashok Badaradinni, Yalanadu Anjanappa, Manjula Badami, and Sambashiva Dalavai; writers Lokesh Agasanakatte, G.S. Ujjinappa, G.N. Mallikarjunappa, Chandrashekar Talya, and B. Thipperudrappa; and the assistant station director of All India Radio, H.S. Saraswathi, will participate, a press release said.

Reservation

Bidar Dec. 7. The Zilla Angavikala Horata Samiti has demanded political reservation for the disabled to ensure sensitive legislation and effective enforcement of welfare measures for them.

In a memorandum to the Government, the samiti said at least five per cent posts in government jobs should be reserved for the disabled. Their other demands include distributing free bus passes to the disabled, increasing the monthly sustenance allowance from Rs. 125 to Rs. 500, and constructing a community hall in the district for the disabled. The samiti president, Moulappa Malage, and the district convenor of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Babu Paswan, have signed the memorandum.

Support

Bidar Dec. 7. The General Workers' Union has supported the strike by 16 daily wage labourers of the social forestry division in Bidar. In a memorandum to the Government, Sangram Bhosle, president of the union, said that though the relay hunger strike was entering the 107th day the Government had not taken any steps to solve their problems. They were dismissed from duty in violation of Supreme Court and High Court judgments. The workers have threatened to commit suicide, Mr. Bhosle said. He has requested the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister to issue directions to ensure that the workers are reappointed.

`Implement meal scheme well'

BANGALORE DEC. 7. Sri Chidambara Dixit Swamiji of Sri Mahayagakshetra Sri Gayathri Temple here has said that government officials should not play politics with the midday meal scheme. He said the officials should implement the scheme with sincerity. The swamiji, who inaugurated the Akshara Dasoha scheme at Anand Higher Primary School at B.K. Nagar, said efforts should be made to provide clean food to schoolchildren.

List of candidates ready

The Special Recruitment Committee of the departments of Health and Family Welfare and Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy has published the final additional selection list of candidates selected for the posts of clinical psychologist, pharmacist, staff nurse (diploma), senior laboratory technician, library assistant, electrician, stenographer, dental mechanic, physiotherapist, physician grade (Unani), homoeopathy, X-ray technician and mechanic. It is available at the office of the Member-Secretary, Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Anand Rao Circle, Bangalore 560 009, says an official release.

Brahmana Mahasabha meet

BANGALORE DEC. 7. The eighth conference of the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha conference will be held at National High School at Basavanagudi here from December 24 to 26. H.N. Ananth Kumar, BJP general secretary and MP from Bangalore South; former Ministers Haranahalli Ramaswamy, R.V. Deshpande and B.K. Chandrashekar; and Dinesh Gundu Rao, MLA, will participate in the conference. B.N.V. Subrahmanya, mahasabha president, will preside over the conference, according to U.V. Srinivasa Murthy, mahasabha general secretary.

Civil-military conference

Bangalore Dec. 7. A civil-military liaison conference is to be held on Thursday at Windsor Sheraton Towers here to discuss encroachment of Defence land, power and water for Defence establishments and boosting enrolment for ex-servicemen. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will inaugurate the conference. Major General Paramjit Singh, General Officer Commanding of Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala Area; the Chief Secretary, K. K. Misra; and the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police, S.N. Borkar, are likely to attend the conference.

ZP president, deputy quit

CHAMARAJANAGAR Dec. 7. T.V. Lakshmamma, Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat president, and Makaiah, its vice-president, submitted their resignation to V.P. Baligar, Secretary to the Government, Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, in Bangalore on Monday. Ms. Lakshmamma and Mr. Makaiah have completed their 10-month tenure as per the internal arrangement of the Congress. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had set December 1 as the deadline for the two to quit their posts. Prakash Rathod, KPCC general secretary, had issued the suspension order against the two for defying the party fiat. Now that the two had submitted their resignation, the KPCC is likely to revoke the suspension order.

Police lathicharge rival groups

KOLAR Dec. 7. The police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse two groups that clashed at Byrandahalli near Vemgal on Tuesday morning. It is said that a group led by Anjaneya Gowda and another led by Narayanappa clashed on Monday evening. Although there was tension in the village, the police brought the situation under control. However, the villagers asked the police to leave the place this morning stating that they would resolve the dispute. When the police were about to leave the village, violence erupted with the rival groups throwing stones at each other. Nanjundappa, brother of Naryanappa, and another person were said to have suffered serious head injuries. They have been rushed to a hospital in Bangalore.

Ambedkar remembered

Mysore Dec. 7. The 48th Parinirvana day of B.R. Ambedkar was observed at the Regional Institute of Education on Monday. T.M. Mahesh, Professor in Urban and Regional Planning, Institute of Development Studies, University of Mysore, inaugurated the programme. He recalled the contribution of Dr. Ambedkar towards education and society. G. Ravindra, Principal, RIEM, presided.

Brahmana Sabha meet

Mysore Dec. 7. The Mysore District Brahamana Sabha will meet on Sunday to discuss issues pertaining to the 8th Akhila Karnataka Brahamanara Sammelana to be held in Bangalore from December 24 to December 26. The district meeting will be held at Sadvidya Pathashala on Narayana Shastry Road at 10 a.m. All executive committee members have been requested to attend the meeting.

Exhibition

Mysore Dec. 7. The Centre for Bharatiya Marketing Development (CBMD) is organising a "Swadeshi Mela" in Mysore from December 22 to December 27 at the Bharath Scouts and Guides grounds.

The mela is an opportunity for local industrialists to present their products and services to the public. The convener of the exhibition, A. Ramdas, said that the mela would showcase indigenous commercial and technical capabilities of the nation. More than 35 exhibitors from the region have confirmed their participation and artisans from across the nation are expected to attend the mela, Mr. Ramdas said.

Man dead

Raichur Dec. 7. Mahadevappa (42), died in Ibrahimdoddi village near here on Sunday. The police said that Mahadevappa had had toddy at two toddy outlets in the village. He quarrelled with the owners when they asked him to pay for the toddy. He died when he fell after allegedly being pushed by the owners. The Raichur Rural police have registered a case.

Four arrested

Raichur Dec. 7. The Raichur police arrested Jangleppa, Devamma, Yellamma, and Mumtaz Begum and seized toddy from them while they allegedly selling it at the railway yard and Bolmandoddi Road on Monday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. Cases have been filed at the Netajinagar Police Station and the City West Police Station.

Ganja seized

Raichur Dec. 7. The Manvi police arrested Pundalika Setty and seized around 485 gm of ganja from him while he was reportedly selling it at the bus stand in Manvi on Monday. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

A case has been registered.
