GURUVAYANAKERE (DAKSHINA KANNADA), DEC 7. The Nagarika Seva Trust here has urged the Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district to cancel all the clearances given to the Nagarjuna Power Project on the grounds that they were given seven years ago and the situation was different now. In a press release here on Tuesday, the trust functionaries urged the Deputy Commissioner to institute a study on the carrying capacity of the district with regard to industrial establishments.
Ideal option
The best option was to have a gas-based power project. The Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, had in fact recommended a gas-based power project for the district. The trust had stated that there was no need for power to be generated here to feed the southern grid. Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd. here had indicated that it could generate 500 MW of power locally in Mangalore, which was sufficient to feed the district, the release added. If the Nagarjuna Power Corporation used force and political might to bring the hazardous coal-based power project to the district, the trust and other organisations would not hesitate to launch a Statewide agitation against the project the release added. Prabhakar Inna, trust coordinator; Premananda Kalmady, Dakshina Kannada Parisarasktha Okkuta Udupi Taluk Samithi president; and M. Bhojappa Gowda, Dakshina Kannada Parisarasktha Okkuta president, have signed the statement.
