MYSORE, DEC. 7. The 16th Indian convention of food scientists and technologists on the theme "Food technology: Rural Outreach-Vision 2020" will be organised here from Thursday. The Association of Food Scientists and Technologists, Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) and Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) are jointly organising the convention. Sharad Ananthrao Joshi, former MP; D.P. Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries; A.N.P. Sinha, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, and C.H. Vijayashankar, Mysore MP, will be participating in the inaugural session. V. Prakash, CFTRI director, told presspersons here today that the convention assumed greater significance at a time when India was poised to be the global outsourcing hub for food processing. Primary processing that was the first step of value addition at the grassroots level had become significant. The focal point of the convention would be rural outreach of food technology with appropriate, adaptable, accessible, available and affordable food technologies. This could be ensured by passing on technologies developed by research and development centres to rural areas.
