Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 7. The Velugu project director, Vani Mohan, launched the Rice Credit Line programme at Gandrai village under Jaggayyapet mandal on Tuesday. The State Government launched the programme as part of its efforts to ensure that farmers and labourers did not suffer for want of food grains during the lean period. The programme envisages supply of rice to beneficiary families identified by the gram sabha and an equivalent amount would be collected from them in four instalments spread over one month. The launch of the programme was, however, not a smooth affair as expected. The moment the Velugu project director started distributing rice, a section of women started protesting against the quality of rice. "The rice shown to us and that supplied now is different," they said.
Selection of rice
Ms. Vani Mohan later interacted with the villagers on the issue. She asked the purchasing committee members -- women, who supervised the purchase of rice -- to answer the queries. She wanted all the members of self-help groups to take part in the programme right from the selection of rice. "
