Noise pollution Sir, A matriculation school at K.K. Nagar in Madurai causes noise pollution every day from morning to evening. Inmates of the school shout over the mike and use musical instruments, tape recorders and loudspeakers. It is a nuisance to all the nearby residents. Will they stop this noise pollution? Ravi, Madurai. Reservation counter Sir, There is a provision for three counters at the reservation centre at the western entrance of Madurai Railway junction. Now, only two counters are used to book and issue open tickets. The middle counter is kept idle. I request the authorities to use the middle counter to ease the crowd. M.S. Raghavan, Madurai. Subsidy to LPG Sir, The Centre may withdraw the subsidy for LPG in a phased manner since, the hoteliers and vehicle owners misuse the LPG. A cylinder per month may be supplied with subsidy to each ration cardholder. Those who buy more than a cylinder should buy it without subsidy. This would really benefit the genuine users. The Government also would be able to save substantial money. D. J. C. Barnes, Madurai. Eviction drive Sir, This is with reference to the report in The Hindu on November 30 regarding the eviction drive on the Vandiyur surplus channel. The drive, though deserves to be appreciated, one wonders why and how illegal structures were allowed to be constructed at all. These would not have come up quite all of a sudden. To construct these structures the officials concerned could have given permission ignoring the mandatory provisions. Because of such indifference, encroachers indulge in such activities. Having allowed such encroachments to exist for a long period, the PWD is pushed to a corner when there is no other choice but to undertake eviction drive, following a court directive. It results in unnecessary agony to those who were involved in such encroachment. Hereafter, encroachments should not be allowed to take place. The officials concerned should implement the rules without fear or favour. Is not prevention better than cure? D. Samuel Lawrence, Madurai. Cleaning public places Sir, This is with reference to the report published in The Hindu in the issue dated November 30 `Rapid action force cleaning public place.' It is an appreciable action. However, engaging an elite branch of police force to such activities is deterrent to their aim of supporting the police to maintain law and order. Their resource may be sparingly used only during natural calamites. P. Deenadayalu, Madurai. Extend city limits Sir, Though Madurai is considered to be the second largest city in the State, its area is small compared to Tiruchi and Coimbatore. The Tiruchi Corporation has increased its frontier. Even Fathima Nagar has been written as Tiruchi-12 whereas in Madurai Othakadai is written as Madurai District. I request the Madurai Corporation to look into this matter and make a feasible study to expand its area. S. Sundara Pandian, Madurai. Poster menace Sir, Of late, billstickers and those who erect banners, billboards and buntings disfigure walls of temples, public offices and important road junctions. Pasting cinema posters with half-clad heroes and heroines attract the attention of students and youths. They do not spare even milestones. Though warning notices are painted at vulnerable areas, they ignore the warnings. They should be booked and punished. The police should be alert and welfare associations should help the police in this regard. M. Ratnasabapathi, Madurai. Bus shelter Sir, Authoor is an important town located on the Tiruchendur - Tuticorin main road. But this town still has no bus shelters. So, it is high time the authorities concerned do the needful to construct shelters. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan. DD commission Sir, Banks are collecting commission for demand draft. But for a sum of Rs.15, HDFC, ING Vysya, ICICI, and Repco Bank levy Rs.50, while State Bank of India charge Rs.15, Central Bank of India Rs.13, Canara Bank Rs.10, and Indian Overseas Bank Rs.12, as commission. Instead the authorities concerned should ask the candidates to submit Indian Postal Orders for smaller amount because the IPO commission is Re. 1 for every Rs.10. The DD cancellation charges are Rs.30. In case of IPO cancellation, there is no such charge. R. Gopalakrishnan, Madurai. Bus stop Sir, The city bus (route number 25) plying between Periyar bus stand and Kulamangalam is very useful to the residents of Kamarajar Nagar, Moovendar Nagar and those in the extension area of Bibikulam. The passengers of Moovendar Nagar and Indira Nagar get down at Kamarajar Nagar Bus stop and walk long distance to reach their destinations. So a new bus stop should be established at Ayyanar Koil (between Kamarajar Nagar and Mullai Nagar) to help the passengers. A TASMAC shop, which is close to the Kamarajar Nagar bus shelter, causes much inconvenience to women passengers during evening hours. Will the authorities concerned do the needful? G. Ramamoorthy, Madurai. Traffic jam Sir, During the Sabarimala season traffic gets worse as many tourist buses are coming to the town. To ease the situation, tourist buses and vans should be stopped at the east end of the town, Teppakulam. It is just three km away from the Meenakshi Temple and Nayakar palace. There are many town buses to reach these spots. All the tourist buses may enter and leave through ring road. V. Ilangovan, Madurai.
