Art gallery

KOLLAM Dec. 7. Novelist Kakanadan will inaugurate the Christina's Art Gallery at the Jerome Nagar here on December 10. It will be the first art gallery for the city. The proprietor of the gallery, Antony John, said that artists could exhibit and organise exclusive exhibitions of their creation at the gallery.

Free eye camp

The Lion's Club of Kollam Greater will organise a free eye camp on December 12. The camp to be held at the Government High School, Mulankadakam, will be inaugurated by the District Collector, B. Sreenivas. A team of doctors from the Tirunellveli Aravind Eye Hospital will lead the camp.

Train rescheduled

Thiruvananthapuram Dec. 7. The 5011 Thiruvananthapuram-Gorakhpur Raptisagar Express, scheduled to leave from Thiruvananthapuram Central at 4.45 a.m. on December 8, has been rescheduled due to the late running of the pairing train. The Raptisagar Express will now depart from here to Gorakhpur at 9 a.m. on December 9.

Test postponed

The test scheduled to be held on Saturday by the Public Service Commission for the selection of candidates for the post of lecturer in biochemistry (non-medical) in the Directorate of Medical Education has been postponed. The fresh date will be announced later. There is no change in the other tests scheduled to be held Saturday by the PSC.

SBT felicitates football team

The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) today felicitated the members of the Kerala football team for winning the Santosh Trophy Tournament. At the felicitation ceremony held at the head office of the SBT here, the bank's Chief General Manager, P.P. Pattanayak, presented mementos to the players and the team officials.

Tanker lorry operators' threat

KOCHI DEC. 7. Tanker lorries operators have threatened to go on strike if the IOC, BPC and the HPC were reluctant to give the rental that had been promised as per the agreement reached on October 6. In a press release here today, different tanker-lorry organisations alleged that the oil companies were reluctant to give the full rental that they owed the truck owners since April 1. Binu Tharian, general secretary of the All Kerala Lorry Owners' and Operators' Welfare Association, said that the operators would on a strike from any day after December 12 to get their dues.

Vellappally clarifies on unity call

The Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam's call for unity of majority communities was aimed at the unity of Hindu communities - from tribals to Namboodiris - in all possible sectors, said Vellappally Natesan, Yogam general secretary. The Yogam was committed to fight the anti-humane customs and practices prevalent in the Hindu community and such movements should come from within the community, the statement said.

ASI dies while on duty

THRISSUR DEC. 7. The Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) attached the Viyyur police station, near here, R. Kumaran of Kolppadam Nivas, Mannarghat in Palakkad district died while on duty this morning. He was 53. Mr. Kumaran complained of chest pain as he came back to the station in the morning after night patrol duty. His life could not be saved though he was rushed to a private hospital in the city.

Award for Ramankutty Nair

Thrissur Dec. 7. Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair has been selected for the Mukundaraja Puraskaram, instituted by the Mukundaraja Cultural Academy and the Mundathikkodu Gramapanchayat. The award will be presented by the Culture Minister, A. P. Anil Kumar, at a function at Ambalapuram on December 26.

Nominated to Railways panel

PATHANAMTHITTA DEC. 7. The Divisional Railway Manager in Thiruvananthapuram has nominated Saleem P. Chacko, State secretary of the Revolutionary Youth Front, as member of the Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee.

Two killed in accident

KOZHIKODE DEC. 7. Two persons were killed and another injured when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with a private bus near the Chengottukkavu panchayat office near Koilandy in the district this morning. The police identified the deceased as Abdulrahman, 55, and Ahamed Haji, 45, both hailing from Perode, near Nadapuram. The two died on the spot.

The driver of the jeep, Nazar, 25, was admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

The police said that the deceased where on their way to to Karipur airport.

Judge accorded reception

ALAPPUZHA DEC. 7. The Chengannur Bar Association accorded a reception to the Kerala High Court Judge Pius C. Kuriakkose when he visited the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court and Munsiff Court there yesterday. The Bar Association felicitated advocates Malakkara R. Gopalakrishna Pillai and M. Sreedhara Warrier who completed fifty years in the profession. The association president, D. Vijayakumar, presided over the function.

Dog show

Thrissur Dec. 7. The Thrissur Canine Club, affiliated to the Kennel Club of India, will organise a dog show at the Thrissur Tennis Trust here on December 26. It will be inaugurated by the Forest Minister K. P. Viswanathan. The Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, will speak. C. V. Sudarsan will be the judge, says a press release.

CMC clinic

KOCHI DEC. 7. The Cooperative Medical College (CMC), Kalamassery, has opened an urban health centre at the Vattekunnam multiple healthcare clinic. Called the Rotary Karmakendra, it is a vocational centre for socio-economic development of people living in the area.
