NEW DELHI, DEC. 7. The Indian cricket team will leave for Dhaka tomorrow after the Government gave the green signal today on the security front for the Bangladesh tour. The first Test match will begin on December 10, instead of December 9 as scheduled earlier. The clearance follows a report submitted by a high-level Indian security team, now in Bangladesh. "The Indian security officials and their Bangladesh counterparts carried out a thorough, joint, on-site inspection of the venue of the match, the hotel where the players will be accommodated as well as the route which will be used for travel by the team," the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said in a statement. "Our officials also made a number of recommendations for strengthening the security arrangements for the team. These were accepted by the Bangladesh authorities," he said. The Bangladesh Home Secretary, Omer Farooq, "personally reviewed" all the arrangements and gave assurances that all additional security arrangements proposed by the Indian officials would be implemented. (These assurances are in writing.) "We deeply appreciate the cooperation and understanding extended to the Indian security team and the personal interest which is being taken by the Bangladesh Home Secretary to ensure that there is no risk to the safety of the Indian cricket team. On this basis, the Government is advising the BCCI [Board of Control for Cricket in India] to proceed... with the tour of the Indian cricket team for matches in Dhaka." However, the statement clarified that the approval, as of now, was only for the Dhaka leg of the tour. "The Indian security delegation will now proceed to Chittagong to make a similar assessment of the security arrangements for the visit of the team to that city. The cricket team's visit to Chittagong will be decided on the basis of the assessment to be given to [the] Government by the delegation."
