New information access facility launched

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam became the first district in the State to have the facility of Instantaneous Access to Exceptional Information Station (INSTAXX Station).

The Chief Secretary to the State Government, Mohan Kanda, Commissioned the INSTAXX Station at the Control Room of the Collectorate on Tuesday. This alerting system was developed by the Centre for Good Governance and had been in use in the office of the Chief Secretary in Hyderabad for the last one year.

Messages could be sent to the INSTAXX Station through following methods: Telephone or PBX numbers: 2563121/22/33, G2G service (fax) number: 2525384, help-line for relief and natural calamities: 2797901, toll free number: 1077, help-line for farmers: 2560098, toll free: 1916, INSTAXX Station mobile call and SMS: 9849903853, telegram and messenger: INSTAXX Station, Collectorate, Visakhapatnam, e-mail: collector_vsk@ap.gov.in and to the wireless sets located in the station.

State-level drama contests

HYDERABAD: The second State-level mythological drama competitions, organised by Andhra Lalita Kala Samiti of South Central Railway, began today at Rail Kalarang, Secunderabad. The three-day competitions were inaugurated by T. Stanley Babu, SCR General Manager.

Dramas Sree Krishna Rayabaram, Varanasi, Maya Bazar, Pandavodyogam, Ashwathama and Upaplavyam will be staged.

Prominent artists from different parts of the State, Mutnuru Sankara Sastry, Puli Seshaiah, K. Sankara Rao, Narayanabhatla Yogi Babu, Burra Subrahmanya Sastry, Kramadhati Venkateswara Sharma, Suvarna, Jamunarayalu, D.V. Pandu Ranga Rao, Salvachari and Borra Nancharaiah will be felicitated.

Vittal Rao is MPs' group convener

HYDERABAD: D. Vittal Rao, Mahabubnagar MP, was today unanimously elected convener of the group of Congress MPs elected from the State to both Houses of Parliament. G. Venkataswamy, deputy leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, presided over the meeting of MPs in Delhi, according to a press release issued by the CPP.

CEEP-2005 on April 24

HYDERABAD: The Common Entrance Examination for admission into polytechnics for the academic year 2005-06 would be held on April 24, according to officials of the State Board of Technical Education and Training here on Tuesday. A detailed notification would be issued shortly.

Candidates who have passed the SSC exam or are appearing for the same in March next year, are eligible to apply for CEEP-2005.

Flag Day: Shinde's contribution

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, today made a cash donation to mark the Armed Forces Flag Day. The Principal Secretary, Home, Swaranjit Sen, and the Director, Sainik Welfare, were present, according to a press release issued by Raj Bhvan. A spokesman said the amount was "substantial".

Move to abandon Gita centres resented

HYDERABAD: The BJP State vice-president, Baddam Bal Reddy, today described as unfortunate the decision of Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) to abandon the move to construct 25 Gita centres in each Assembly constituency. In a statement here, he said the centres could play a significant role in preventing disputes and differences in villages.

Woman, son run over by train

CUDDAPAH: Venkatalakshmamma (25) and her son, Sunil (9), were fatally run over by an express train near Gopulapuram railway crossing between Kamalapuram and Yerraguntla stations last evening. Venkatalakshmamma of Gopulapuram in Kamalapuram mandal was crossing the track along with her son and daughter, when the mishap occurred. The girl escaped unhurt, according to the police.

Patient ends life in hospital

NIZAMABAD: A 30 year-old patient, Bommagari Srinivas, committed suicide by hanging himself to an exhaust fan at a lavatory in the district headquarter hospital in the early hours of Tuesday. According to hospital sources, Mr. Srinivas of Ambedkar Colony joined the hospital for hydrocele operation on November 29. He was operated upon on December 3 by a civil surgeon, S.S. Yadav, and thereafter he was recuperating. He was to be discharged on Thursday. He is survived by wife, Padma, two sons and a daughter.

Fake travel agent arrested

KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar special branch police have arrested another fake Gulf travel agent, who allegedly cheated a youth promising him an attractive job in Gulf nations, on Tuesday.

The special branch SI, Ganapathi Jadav, said that the accused, C.P Johnson of Illanthakunta mandal, had promised, E. Balreddy, a gardener job in Saudi. He collected from Balreddy Rs. one lakh and passport and conducted medical examination for the issuance of visa.

The visa stated that his job was that of a mason and not a gardener. After five months, he returned to his native place and approached the agent. The agent handed over Rs. 25,000 and threatened to kill him if he demanded the remaining amount. The victim lodged a complaint with the police who arrested Jonson. Another travel agent of Korutla was at large.

Moderate cold spell continues

Hyderabad: The State continued to be under a moderate cold spell on Tuesday also. The lowest night temperature for the day was recorded by Adilabad and Medak at 10 degree Celsius. Minimum temperatures changed little in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

According to a forecast, dry weather will prevail over the State on Wednesday.

TDP holds rasta roko

ADILABAD: The district unit of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Tuesday staged a rasta roko at the Collectorate chowk on the National Highway 7, disrupting vehicular traffic. The agitating TDP activists were demanding a fair price for cotton. A large number of TDP workers led by the party spokesman, S. Venugopalachary, former MLAs, G. Nagesh and Ramesh Rathod, took out a rally in the town before staging the rasta roko. Thereafter, they marched to the Collectorate and submitted a memorandum to the Collector, J. Sudha Rani. Among the other demands made by the TDP were putting a stop to the cuts in payments to farmers and curbing illegal trade practices by private traders.

Three held in murder case

WARANGAL: The Hanamkonda police solved the mystery behind a murder and arrested three persons allegedly involved in the case. According to Circle Inspector, J Surender Reddy, and SI G Sekhar Goud, K Randhir, I Madhava Rao and H Seenu were taken into custody. Ranadhir and Seenu axed to death M Sarangapani on November 27 at Komatipalli village in Hasanparthy mandal and were at large since then. I Madhava Rao, a constable at Mahabubabad police station and relative of prime accused Ranadhir, was also taken into custody for encouraging the duo in eliminating Sarangapani.

Armed Forces Day celebrated

KARIMNAGAR: The Armed Forces Day was celebrated in the district on Tuesday to express the solidarity of civilians to the brave acts of soldiers, protecting the country from external aggression.

The NCC 9 Andhra battalion under the leadership of Lt Col. A.K Jaggi collected donations from civilians to help the families of war widows and physically challenged soldiers during wars. NCC cadets collected donations throughout the district. The Collector, C Parthasarathi, inaugurated the Flag Day by making a donation. The Karimnagar range DIG, A.R Anuradha, and the SP, Rajiv Ratan, also offered their donations. Captain B Madhusudhan Reddy and others were also present.

Elected to APUWJ

NIZAMABAD: Angirekula Sailoo and Bobbili Narasaiah have been elected president and secretary, respectively, of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) district unit. The following have also been elected to the union: vice-presidents Jagdish, M.A. Majid and V. Rajnikanth, joint secretaries Bala Prakash, Javeed Pasha, B. Sanga Reddy and J. Veeraiah and treasurer B.G. Prasad. Executive committee members; Ahmed Syed, Anwar Khan, Arvind Balaji, Md. Hafeezuddin, Iliyasuddin, Krishna Munagala, B. Ramesh, Rasheed Hussain, B. Sekhar, Sopan, K. Srinivas, J. Veerappa, Wahab Syed and M.N. Chary.

The State council members elected were Ahmed Ali Khan, A. Chandrasekhar, P. Devidas and P. Madhusudhan Reddy. Ravi Pratap Chawla acted as the returning officer.
