National anthem first

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 7. The Assembly scripted a new chapter on Tuesday when it began its winter session with the playing of the national anthem.

The national anthem was played at the start of the session at 10 a.m. on the first day while the entire gathering, led by the Speaker, K. R. Suresh Reddy, and including the press corps, stood up.

Mr Reddy later told The Hindu that he had opted for introduction of the anthem with a view to instilling a sense of national spirit and pride and attachment among the members and remind of them of their solemn duties before going ahead with the legislative business. It would also send a message to people as the proceedings were telecast live.

He said the national anthem was played in Parliament at the commencement of every session, a practice being followed by the Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh Assemblies. In other States such as Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Assam, the anthem was played before the Governor's address.
