Parab, Pawar take Baroda to victory

HYDERABAD, DEC. 7. Hrishikesh Parab and southpaw Rajesh Pawar's unbroken partnership of 149 helped Baroda record a five-wicket win over Hyderabad in the Elite B Ranji Trophy fourth round match, virtually pushing the home team out of contention for a semifinal spot.

Resuming at 182 for five on the final day with 94 needed for victory, Pawar (95 not out) and Parab (93 not out) rarely found themselves in any trouble and while neither reached what would have been a well-deserved century, both were there till the end. Baroda thus managed to stay afloat with four points from this match.

Defending champion Mumbai beat Bengal by an innings and 132 runs to net five points (including a bonus) in the Elite A match in Kolkata.

Ajit Agarkar picked up four wickets as Bengal, following on, was bundled out for 181 in its second innings. Bengal captain Rohan Gavaskar made an unbeaten 70. Ramesh Powar returned with a 10-wicket match haul.

Karnataka won its first match of the season when it beat Andhra Pradesh by five wickets at Bangalore in an Elite A match.

Andhra was dismissed in the first session for 245 after its tail wagged a bit. Chasing 155 for victory, Karnataka encountered some anxious moments before first innings century-maker Thilak Naidu once again came to the rescue with an unbeaten 36. Karnataka has six points from four matches, while Andhra languishes on two.

Sathish's feat

At Guwahati, the Elite B match between Tamil Nadu and Assam meandered into a tame draw on the final day. Tamil Nadu export R. Sathish scored a superb unbeaten 204 for Assam, the first double hundred for the side in 12 years. Tamil Nadu, however, managed to secure the first innings lead and two points from the tie. Tamil Nadu, last year's finalist, now has nine points from three games.
