DINDIGUL, DEC. 7. The second junior National (girls under-17) football championship will get underway at the newly constructed Dindigul District Stadium with a football turf ground here on Thursday, Dec. 9 Though this national championship is not of high magnitude, it gets more importance in this town, as this is the first ever national event here and that too at the newly constructed stadium at a cost of Rs. 118 lakhs, inclusive of laying the turf for football ground and also getting the necessary modern equipment for the upkeep of the turf, which alone costs of Rs. 4.15 lakhs. The championship will be organised by the Dindigul District Football Association. For the successful conduct of the championship on influential organising committee, headed by the District Collector Mr. Murugaia, had been formed with the DDFA secretary Shanmugam. He said, 19 teams, including the defending champion Manipur and runner-up Orissa are participating in the championship, which will be played on league-cum-knockout basis. The 19 teams are divided into six clusters for the first league phase and the top team of each cluster and "two" second best teams from all clusters will qualify for the second phase quarterfinals league, which will be played in two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout semifinals.
Cluster A: Manipur, Jharkhand, Rajasthan. Cluster B: West Bengal, Maharshtra, Andhra Pradesh. Cluster C: Chandigarh, Bihar, Haryana. Cluster D: Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh. Cluster E: Orissa, Punjab, Uttranchal. Cluster F: Kerala, Tripura, Chattisgarh.
The final is slated for Dec. 24.
