Mysore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MYSORE,
DEC. 7.
According to sources in the Mysore City Corporation, the drive that was launched with a lot of gusto on Tuesday morning began to slow down in the afternoon.
The drive was stopped completely by the evening, as there was pressure from "higher authorities in Bangalore."
When contacted, the Mayor, Dakshinamurthy, told The Hindu that he was not aware of any pressure on the corporation to slow down the drive.
"However, I hear that the drive slowed down late in the afternoon and was discontinued for the day in the evening," he said.
Mr. Dakshinamurthy said he would ensure that the drive continued tomorrow, as the decision to crack down on illegal hoardings was taken in at a council meeting. He also said that he was bound to honour it, being the first citizen of Mysore. "Attempts to thwart the drive will not be tolerated, as this has a bearing on the heritage status of the city."
He said that the elected representatives were answerable to the public. The drive would be extended to such billboards that were distracting and put up in a haphazard manner, he added.
