Gadgets at the Science Park on the RIE campus in Mysore. The park will be inaugurated on Friday.
MYSORE, DEC. 7. The Regional Institute of Education (RIE) here of the National Council of Educational Research and Training has established a Science Park on its campus in a bid to popularise science subjects among students. The Science Park, spread over 3,600 square metres on the southern side of the RIE campus, has been developed as an extension of its existing exploratory laboratory. N.N. Prahallada, Reader in Education and Editor of the RIE Newsletter, said that the objective of establishing the park was to provide children and science teachers an opportunity to work with gadgets and learn science in an informal manner. "We hope that the gadgets facilitate nurturing of scientific knowledge through play techniques," he said.
On display
The gadgets on display include musical pipes, parabolic dishes, gear train, pendulum, see-saw, lever, angular momentum chair, Barton's pendulum, sympathetic swing, projectile, colour filters, cycloidal path, Newton's colour disc, three-dimensional pendulum, Archimedes screw, and sundials. The Science Park is the first of its kind in the region. The park will be open from Monday through Friday between 2.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. On second Saturdays, the Science Park will be open between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Schools may bring their students in groups of 25 to 30 along with a teacher after informing the RIE. Renowned scientist and Linus Pauling Research Professor, C.N.R. Rao, will inaugurate the park at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. J. Shashidhar Prasad, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, will preside over the function, Dr. Prahallada said.
