Telugu Desam for panels at marketyards to ensure MSP

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, DEC. 7. The district unit of the Telugu Desam Party has asked the district administration to constitute a five-member committee consisting of officials and farmers at all marketyards in the district to ensure minimum support price to farm produce.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the TDP district president, L. Ramana, alleged that officials in connivance with traders were deceiving farmers by not ensuring MSP to cotton in Karimnagar and other marketyards in the district. He warned the district administration that the party would form its own committee to visit marketyards everyday to ensure MSP to farm produce.

He asked the Government to announce MSP of Rs. 2,500 per quintal to cotton on par with Maharashtra. He also demanded that the Congress Government implement its election promise of releasing Rs. 500 crores as market intervention fund to protect farmers' interests.

Surprise visit

The TDP team led by the district president along with the former legislator, K. Devender Rao, the official spokesperson, Eda Shankar Reddy, the TDP mahila wing president, R. Usha Rani, the district grandalaya samstha chairman, B. Rajesham and others made a surprise visit to Karimnagar agricultural marketyard on Tuesday.

As soon as the TDP team and mediapersons entered the market, the MSP of the cotton was increased from Rs. 1,700 per quintal to Rs. 1,900. Even MSP of maize was increased from Rs. 508 to Rs. 520 per quintal. There were contradictory reports from the officials about the procurement of cotton in Karimnagar market. The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) states that it had procured about 50,000 quintals of cotton, while the marketyard records say procurements ran up to only 20,000 quintals.
