MAHBUBNAGAR, DEC. 7. A visually challenged man, Srisailam (32), committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Tuesday evening, allegedly unable to bear humiliation by officials at the office of the Mandal Parishad Development Officer in Amrabad mandal headquarters, 130 km away. Villagers staged a dharna, which went on till late on Tuesday evening, demanding suspension of the officials concerned. It is said that Srisailam got married recently. His wife is therefore eligible for the incentive of Rs. 3,000 announced by the Government for women marrying a blind man. The officials could not keep up their promise of getting the incentive distributed through the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, during his visit to the mandal on Sunday as part of the Rajiv Palle Baata programme. Srisailam went to the MPDO office on Monday and Tuesday to receive the incentive but was allegedly insulted by the officials. Unable to stomach the insults, he reportedly took the extreme step.
