CHANDIGARH, DEC 7. Agro Tech 2004 generated direct business worth US $ 158 million and elicited enquiries worth US$ 564 million. About 2.15 lakh visitors were recorded during the four-day event which ended here late last evening. This was claimed by the office of the Northern Region of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which hosted the sixth edition of the high- profile exposition of agri-business. Rajasthan bagged the first prize for its display in States' section, the Multi-exchange commodity of India topped in the Agri-service section, while ITC walked away with the overall honours. The Governor of Haryana, A.R. Kidwai, who presided over the valedictory session was particularly impressed with the E-chaupal that had been displayed at the fair, presenting the opportunity provided by developments in the global communications at the doorstep the rural masses. He stressed that future developments in the farm sector should ensure a "win-win situation for all stakeholders'' where the farmer should get the right price for his produce and the industry should process and market the products profitably, while keeping in view the interests of consumers. Speaking on the occasion Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperation in the Union Government, Radha Singh, reiterated the Government's commitment to agriculture reforms, which would facilitate large- scale private investment in every step of the value chain. She said that the Government's two-pronged agenda aimed at pushing through specific enabling reforms in agriculture and working with State Governments to convince them to implement relevant reforms at the earliest.
