Honour for Delhi Police

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 7. The Delhi Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, yesterday lauded his officers and men for their commendable performance in the field of community policing which fetched them the "Webber Seavey Award" at the 11th Annual Conference of International Association of Chiefs of Police this past November.

According to a Delhi police spokesperson, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Legal Cell), R.S. Ghumman, had been nominated to accept the Award on behalf of the Delhi police at a function held in Los Angeles, the United States, on November 15. Mr. Ghumman today presented the Award to the Police Commissioner after returning. The Award is given in recognition of promoting a standard of excellence that exemplifies law enforcement's contribution and dedication to the quality of life in local communities, said the spokesperson.

Exhorting his men, Dr. Paul said the Delhi police was undoubtedly the best police force in the country which has maintained law and order by using innovative means of community policing. He added that recent visit of the Commissioner of London Metropolitan Police, during which notes on community policing were exchanged, had also proved helpful in taking the community policing initiative forward. The Award was conferred on the Delhi police for its project "High Quality Enforcement Through Community Policing". The project, initiated in October 2002, was spearheaded by Mr. Ghumman who had roped in vendors, porters and taxi and three-wheeler drivers at railway stations to work as "eyes and ears" for the police. The exercise had led to a drop in crime rate at railway stations by 16 per cent and the detection rate went up by 6 per cent.
