Cultural evening

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's MBA Department organised a programme of dance, drama and songs this past week-end.

The highlight of the cultural evening was dance compositions in Bharatanatyam and Western music, and a play written, directed and staged by students of Bhavan's MBA Department underlining the importance of family values as opposed to aggressive pursuit of wealth by any means.

Book released

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. A new book, "Lakshana and Lakshya of Karnatic Music: A Quest" authored by T.V.Manikandan, Lecturer in Delhi University's Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, was released by M.P.Veerendra Kumar, Member of Parliament, at a function organised by Gayathri Fine Arts here over the week-end.

Mr.Veerendra Kumar complimented Dr. Manikandan for his elaborate research.

Planetary watch session

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. Under the aegis of Space Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE), the Astronomy Club of Bal Bharati Public School on Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Marg organised an "evening session'' of planetary and lunar watch for students, parents and staff this past week.

On the occasion, the school principal, L.V.Sehgal, stressed the importance of developing a scientific temper among students. Earlier, members of the Club were also taken to Gurgaon for night sky observation. They observed and learnt to locate the various constellations in the sky.

Computers presented

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. The "digital divide'' was closed on Tuesday for the children of Vivekanand Basti in New Delhi when the American Embassy School presented to them three hi-tech computers with WI-FI and NIIT's Minimally Invasive Education (MIE) technology. The initiative was also supported by the American Women's Association of New Delhi, and will go a long way in integrating the children of the area into the present technology-led environment.

The kiosk, that comes with the unique MIE technology, has been developed by NIIT's Centre for Research in Cognitive Systems. The technology is now being made available to the world through "Hole In the Wall Education Limited'' (HIWEL), a joint venture company formed between NIIT and the International Finance Corporation, a World Bank affiliate. Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of NIIT, R. S. Pawar, said: "Through the Hole-in-the-Wall experiment, we are trying to find innovative ways to touch millions of young children, including those outside the school system, and bring them into the mainstream. We intend to bring high quality education within the reach of all through our research."

Free eye camp

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. A free eye camp is being organised at Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi by Tarun Mitra Parishad on December 11.

The camp will be inaugurated by the Delhi Finance Minister, A.K.Walia, and the Mayor, A.R.Verma, will be the chief guest on the occasion. The 39th eye camp of the Parishad will be held at Vatsalya Play House, F-236, Mangal Bazar, Laxmi Nagar. A medical team from St. Stephen's Hospital will examine the patients.
