CHENNAI, DEC. 7. Indian women develop glucose intolerance during pregnancy manifold compared to any ethnic group in the world. This can mean that both the mother and the child will develop diabetes later. To share the knowledge of the recent advances in treatment and prevention of the disorder, experts from obstetrics, diabetology, paediatrics and internal medicine will meet at the two-day event here. The `international colloquium on diabetes and pregnancy' is being organised by the Dr. V. Seshiah, Diabetes Care and Research Institute on December 11 and 12. It is expected to arrive at a consensus on screening and diagnosis of glucose intolerance during pregnancy. About 700 delegates, mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, will attend. Addressing presspersons here today, the organising chairman, Dr. Seshiah, said though children got their genes from both parents, children of mothers who developed diabetes at a relatively young age were at a greater risk of getting the disorder. Hence, prevention of diabetes in the mother and the children depended on how effectively the mother was screened and the metabolic disturbance corrected. The institute developed a simple and economic screening and diagnostic procedure, said V. Balaji, organising secretary.
